Tumu team members recently joined hundreds of Hawke’s Bay students for an inspiring morning of innovation and mentorship at the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Spark Tank event, held at Toitoi – Hawke’s Bay Arts & Events Centre.
The event brought together approximately 450 students from 19 schools across the region, alongside around 100 local business mentors. Spark Tank provides a valuable platform for students to pitch their early-stage business ideas, receive feedback, and gain practical insights as they develop their ventures throughout the year.
Representing Tumu were Gareth Biggs and Libby Dawson, joined by Daniel O’Sullivan (Killarney Capital), Nichola Tuakanangaro (Tumu Timbers), and Rachel Terry and Anton Douglas (Welcome). Throughout the morning, mentors worked closely with student groups – helping refine concepts, explore challenges, and test ideas in a real-world context.
The event also featured a talk from Anton Douglas, who shared his experience launching Welcome – one of the businesses within Tumu – as well as insights from more than a decade of investing in startups across New Zealand and the United States. His message gave students a practical look at what it takes to build a business, navigate early challenges, and learn from experience.
